What Counts as AI?

Understanding what we mean when we say "AI-free" is the first step toward informed choice.

AI-Generated Code

Code produced by large language models like GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar tools — where AI writes the logic, not the developer.

AI-Generated Visuals

Images, illustrations, or design assets produced by generative AI tools like Midjourney, DALL·E, or Stable Diffusion.

AI-Written Content

Blog posts, documentation, marketing copy, or any substantial text produced or heavily rewritten by generative language models.

AI-Driven Decisions

Core product decisions, algorithmic outputs, or user-facing features that rely on opaque machine learning models rather than human judgment.

Why It Matters

The Case for Human Craft

We're not anti-technology. We're pro-transparency. In a world where AI can generate entire products overnight, the choice to build something by hand has meaning — for creators and users alike.

  • 🛠
Genuine craftsmanship. Every line written by a human carries intent, context, and accountability that generated output simply can't replicate.
  • 👁
Radical transparency. Users deserve to know if what they're reading, using, or trusting was made by a human or mass-produced by a model.
  • 🌎
Sustainable creativity. Over-reliance on generative AI homogenizes culture and devalues human skill. Non-AI projects keep diversity alive.
  • 👥
Community trust. Non-AI verification signals that real people poured real time into the work — and stand behind it.

Our Verification Standards

The Non-AI Project Standard is based on transparency, auditability, and genuine human authorship — not vague promises.

01

Full Disclosure

Projects must disclose all tools used in production — including any AI tools used for research, spell-check, or automation that doesn't cross into authorship.

02

Human Authorship

All code, copy, and design must be substantially authored by identified humans. Minor AI-assisted completions (like autocomplete) must be declared.

03

Independent Audit

Verification is conducted by third-party auditors who review commit history, design files, and contributor records. Self-certification is not accepted.

04

Annual Renewal

Certification is renewed annually. Projects must re-submit for review whenever their development practices change significantly.

05

Community Reporting

Anyone can submit a concern about a verified project. All concerns are investigated within 30 days by our review committee.

06

Open Standard

Our full verification criteria are published openly. Any organization is free to adopt, adapt, or critique our standard — we invite scrutiny.
